Some considerations

Alright, this is a simple guide that I myself think is a good way to start creating your game (even if it is not your first one). One thing to be noticed is that I'm not here to tell you what are the differences or which Game Engine you should use.

I'm considering you have already passed through that and had picked the one you want to work with (It doesn't matter if you're still not sure you're gonna be with that one from now on, what matters is you're ready to start a project).

And also, just to be sure, you have to keep these two things in mind:

- the concepts I'll be using here will be generic and can be applied in any kind of project or engine.

- This is not the only way to do things, it's only how I found to be better since I'm an indie developer. Of course you can read it all and have your own point, there's no need to follow up straight every line.

So let's get started.

1 - A kind of Story

Every game must have a simple 'story' before start coding. Even if it's not the focus or it is a puzzle kind of game. Here's how I'm defining story: A basis structure that gives meaning to your game. It can be a dialogue box at the beginning or even the title that tells the player what it is going to be about.

What in earth should that mean? Well, basically what I'm saying is that your game should have something that tells the player what he is going to go through at the moment he presses the "play" button.

This is important because you can make the person to expect something even before he plays, that will generate sort of default thoughts at his mind and you can use that for your benefits.

Here is the main tip I consider to make this topic worth it on your game: You can use the strategy of bringing up a Plot Twist. Make the player be surprised and teaches him not to judge a book because of its cover.

2 - The Art Style

One more thing you crucially need to have settled before starting the coding part is you art style. If you don't have that in mind you will probably change your mind two or more times during the process and at the end you're gonna have a different feeling that you originally could have imagined.. or maybe you could end up with some mix of different art styles that doesn't look good at all.

The problem is that once these things are bad done, it is hard for you to notice where you made the mistake.

Here are the tips I suggest you to do: Watch several games that satisfy the art style you want it to have and compare those to have that pictured so then, imagine that on your game. Of course, if you're working with an artist, tell him this simple but powerful tip.

3 - Organization

I know this oftenly said by most of people at practically every area that you can work. Although, there is always a need to KEEP that in mind. After all, we are humans and our bodies are made to use as less energy as possible to get what we want, but what our bodies don't know is WHEN to do that, we live in a modern society so you have the 'duty' to warn it how to do it right.

Here are some tips for organization: You can use several apps to take notes while coding, writing stories or planning what to do tomorrow.

It's not sponsored but a good suggestion is the application Trello (there's a web version and also android/IOS application)
